Topic: Project Management – Myth and Reality for Engineers Speaker: Brent Glasgow, PMP Abstract: There are many misconceptions about project management, and at times it can be the wrong way to tackle a problem. Engineers are often required to participate in and sometimes lead projects for companies. This presentation will focus on a few practical techniques that can help produce the right business results on efforts, while addressing some erroneous beliefs that cause many engineering projects to fail. Content Includes: · A Planned Approach – is this always good? · Work Breakdown Structures – what are they and when are they helpful? · The Dreaded Task Estimate – why is this so hard? · Project Risk – what is an acceptable level of uncertainty? · The Project Plan – what makes them good and why are most so bad?
Speaker Bio: Brent Glasgow is the Director of the Project Management Office for ALSAC / St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, America’s second largest health-care charity. He has 10+ years project management experience and has worked extensively with Fortune 100 companies including International Paper and Deutsche Post DHL. Brent holds the globally recognized Project Management Professional (PMP)®credential from Project Management International and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Christian Brothers University. Brent is a native of the Southern United States and has been in the Memphis Area for the last eleven years. While away from the office, Brent’s hobbies include racquetball, road trips, and family time with his wife, Lee, and son, Alex.
